Repositories

What is a repository?

A repository, or "repo", is a place on the web which stores the knowledge of which PCLinuxOS software packages are available to install or upgrade.

Your repository settings are used by the Synaptic Package Manager to install or upgrade official PCLinuxOS software. For more details see Installing and Updating Software

All repositories contain the same files. The only difference between them is the speed in which your location can download files from their location. Using multiple repositories is redundant. It's important just to pick one which is the best speed for you. Note: Experiment to find which repository location is the best for you. Geographically close repositories may not be fast for you.

Donators to the PCLinuxOS project receive access to a faster PASS repository.

Changing your Synaptic repository settings

If you are having trouble finding your software with Synaptic, here is how you teach Synaptic to use other repositories.
  1. Start Synaptic by either using the icon in the desktop bar, at the bottom-left or by clicking the Menu button at the bottom-left of your screen, and navigate the menus to System > Configuration > Packaging > Synaptic Package Manager.
  2. In either case, Synaptic will ask you for your root password. (If you forgot your root password check this).
  3. Now that Synaptic is open, go to the menu at the top, click "Settings" and then "Repositories".
  4. You'll see the "Repositories" popup. Expand the window to see more details about the repositories.
  5. If you just want to change your repository mirror, un-check the default (or present) repository, then checkmark the one you want from the mirrors that are listed, and then click OK. Next, click the Reload button and wait for Synaptic to download the lists of packages that are available on the mirror you have changed to.

Important: You should only have one repository enabled by default. Make sure you un-check your present repository and then checkmark your new one.

Adding a new Repository to Synaptic

In the Repositories window, click new.
We will be entering these three pieces of information:
URI
Distribution
Section(s)

After you enter these three items, you can click ok at the bottom-right. Then click the Reload button and wait for Synaptic to download the new information from your new repository.
Where do you get these three pieces of information from? Your choices are listed at the bottom of this page.

Choose which ever one is fastest for you. Geographical nearness may not mean that that server is the fastest for you. You may need to try more than one if getting the best speed is important to you.

Donators to the PCLinuxOS project receive access to a faster PASS repository.

Important: You should only have one repository enabled by default. Make sure you un-check your present repository and then checkmark your new one.

NOTE: Some Section(s) include "testing" but that should only be added for experienced users who want access to potentially unstable tester-only packages.

Update your PCLinuxOS 2007 repositories

Every now and again there are updates to existing packages that are in the repositories - OR - new packages get added to the repositories. You will not have these shown in the Synaptic Package Manager unless Synaptic updates the available list of packages (RPM's) that are on the Mirror that you use.

Usually if you have not used the Synaptic Package Manager for a while, when you open Synaptic a small pop up window asks you if it should RELOAD the package information, you should do this to keep your repository list up to date.

Sometimes you may have used the Synaptic Package Manager within the last 48 hours and so will not get the small pop up window shown, asking you to Reload (update) the lists. You may know or believe that updated or new packages have recently been added to the repositories (ie. you may have seen an announcement in the PCLinuxOS Forums). If this is the case and you want to check, then: At the top left in the Synaptic Package Manager window is a RELOAD button, click it and Synaptic will go and update the list of packages for you.

A good rule of thumb to ensure that your Synaptic list of packages is kept up to date is to open the Synaptic Package Manager once a week and just click the RELOAD on the small pop up window and let it do it for you.
