Getting PCLinuxOS

Getting Linux on your computer is not difficult! Whether you choose to purchase PCLinuxOS or download it free, you can have a Linux LiveCD booting up on your computer in a short time.

In this document we're going to explain a few ways you may get PCLinuxOS.

What to Get - Current Version of PCLinuxOS

  • PCLinuxOS 2007 – The current full-sized version.
  • MiniMe 2008 – Newer and more basic.
  • PCLinuxOS Gnome – For those who like the Gnome desktop.

PCLinuxOS 2007

PCLinuxOS 2007 Full CD Edition is available for download or online ordering. The full edition comes with Kernel 2.6.18.8, KDE 3.5.6, OpenOffice.org, Firefox, Thunderbird and Nvu. Digikam, Gimp and GQview are available for your digital photo needs. Amarok, Audacity and Audio Creator have been installed to scratch your digital music itch. MiniMe 2008

This is an ultra slim version of PCLinuxOS. In addition to the Live CD mode you can also save your changes to HDD or a usb key disk. PCLinuxOS MiniMe can be installed to your computer by simply clicking on the install icon on the desktop… After hard drive installation, you can access about 7500 programs to fully customise your desktop the way YOU want. PCLinuxOS MiniMe comes with the 2.6.22.15 kernel, a basic KDE 3.5.8 desktop, CD Installer, Synaptic Software Manager and Control Center.

PCLinuxOS Gnome

PCLinuxOS Gnome Edition is a community remaster that has almost 2 GBs of software compressed on a single, self-bootable LiveCD that can be installed to your hard drive, provided it is compatible with your system and you like the distribution. Almost 8000 additional packages are available after hard drive install through our Synaptic Software Manager. PCLinuxOS Gnome Edition also contains Kernel 2.6.22.15, GNOME 2.21.2, GNOME Office Apps, Firefox 2.0.0.12, Compiz-Fusion, GNOMEDo, Me Tv, Serpentine, Brasero, Banshee Music Player, GNOME Power Manager, and much much more!

Buy PCLinuxOS

One very easy method of getting PCLinuxOS is to purchase a CD from On-Disk.com Burning Service. When you buy a disk from On-Disk.com, you help with the support of PCLinuxOS. This is a great way to make sure you get a CD that is burned properly -a very common trouble issue- while at the same time helping the development of PCLinuxOS. Purchasing a CD is also a good idea if you're on dial-up or have a download limit.

Downloading

HTTP/FTP Mirrors

PCLinuxOS is available for free with no strings attached! Be sure to get both the ISO file and the small .md5sum file with the same name. For information on how to burn the downloaded ISO file to a CD, please read the Burning-and-Ripping-CDs/DVDs page.

Download Alternatives

Problems with booting the live CD of PCLinuxOS are usually caused by bad CD burning and/or a bad download.

The failed download is very easily addressed. The traditional download methods, FTP and HTTP, are error-prone because they are based on your connection to the download source. There is no built in error-checking and most everyone experiences time periods of slow or shaky connections.

There are three download methods which may be a lot faster. In the majority of cases, they have lot higher max user limits, and best of all, they guarantee a 100% correct download because of the built-in verification.

  • BitTorrent
  • Rsync
  • Metalink

Of these, BitTorrent Clients seem to be the most popular!

Using BitTorrent

BitTorrent shares bandwidth, which often results in faster downloads. We have a page with information about using Bittorrent if you are new to using BitTorrent.

To start downloading the CD via BitTorrent, you can go directly to the LinuxTracker.org site hosting PCLinuxOS torrents. Please be advised that many of the older versions may no longer be valid, as all versions previous to PCLinuxOS 2007 will no longer be actively supported by Texstar and his team at the official forums.

Using Rsync

Rsync is often used for downloading and mirroring FTP servers, but it also makes a good way for downloading PCLinuxOS! Just like BitTorrent, it automatically checks and corrects any errors it finds. Unlike BitTorrent, it does not share bandwidth. If you know how to use rsync already, connect to and find out which ISOs are available from:

We have a page with information about Rsync if you are new to using rsync.

Using Metalink

Metalink integrates multiple mirror (FTP/HTTP) and P2P downloads. It allows for faster and more reliable transfers as well as automated checksum verification. Metalink downloads will usually be faster than standard P2P downloads because

  1. they are supported by mirrors as well and
  2. are not restricted like P2P which some offices, universites, and ISPs block.

Metalink uses a single file (a .metalink) to store this information which is then used by download managers such as:

  • aria2 (Unix command line)
